U.S.S. Endeavour
(NX-25990)

Mission

A deep space heavy cruiser designed for long-range exploration and defense of the Federation, the Endeavour-class design serves as a testbed for state-of-the-art Federation technology. This ship design will serve as a weapons platform should the need arise to battle hostile aliens, but its primary duty is to explore strange new worlds and civilizations.

Features

The Endeavour-class was designed during the height of the Dominion War as a mobile weapons platform, and as such, carries with it the best in offensive and defensive technologies available to Starfleet at the time. The prototype ship, the USS Endeavour, sports eight Type XII phaser arrays located equidistantly around the saucer section, with the highest reliability that can be afforded in a ship of this size and classification. It also has five Mk 95 DF torpedo launchers with quantum penetration, utilizing the best in current Federation design. Three of the launchers are located fore of the ship, and two are located to the aft. For defensive purposes, the Endeavour-class has an FSS-3 regenerating shield grid, with a reliability equalling that of the new Sovereign-class vessel.

As an exploratory vessel, the Endeavour-class has state-of-the-art operations systems and life support, with space for a hundred units of cargo in its bays. The sensor suite on the prototype vessel is an experimental system, with a decent, but still poor, reliability.

The class carries twenty size worth of support craft, mostly fighters and shuttles. Taking a cue from the newly developed Prometheus-class design, the Endeavour-class also has a multi-vector assault mode (MAM) function installed, allowing the ship to separate into two unmanned support "fightercraft", controlled by the main ship. Each subship has single Type XII phaser arrays located to the fore of the subship, and an aft torpedo launcher with quantum penetration. It also has it's own FSS-3 shield generator.

The propulsion systems aboard the Endeavour-class are the fastest that could be fit on a ship of this size. The FIG-7 impulse engine allows a speed of up to .95c, and it's LF-50 Mod 1 Warp engine allows a maximum speed of Warp 9.99.

The standard mission duration for an Endeavour-class is estimated at 7 years, with an estimated 18-year time between system overhauls. Starfleet expects, with the successful testing of the Endeavour, this class of ship will be a mainstay of the fleet well into the 25th century.

Background

The Endeavour-class is the result of Starfleet's need for a dedicated mobile weapons platform that could be used against the Dominion alliance fleet. The prototype ship, the Endeavour, was launched just a couple of months before the signing of the treaty between the Dominion and the races of the Alpha Quadrant. It participated as a front-line combatant at the final battle for Cardassia Prime, and was quickly put back into Starbase 1 for a quick refit for a long-range exploration mission. It still had the same tactical systems installed that it had during the end of the war, but its operations systems and sensor suite were upgraded to allow for an autonomous exploratory vessel not readily seen since the Constitution-class of the mid-24th century.

Work on the Endeavour-class began in early 2375 as the war was at its peak and the Federation was slowly losing the war to attrition. The Starfleet Corps of Engineers began work on designing this powerful and versatile ship, using Sovereign and Prometheus designs as a template. Being desperate as they were, the designers rushed the development process, adding the best technologies available to them, and assembling the ship as quickly as it could. As such, the ship performed merely mediocre. It wasn't until after the war and its subsequent refit did the prototype ship show any decent improvement. The systems were more reliable and the ship was then relaunched with Captain Berthold Tenille, veteran of the Cardassian War and the subsequent Dominion War, as its commander.
